Dear friends,

2019 was an important year for us at UEBT.  We saw the revision process of the UEBT standard and significant growth of UEBT activities. We welcomed many new members, our conference attendance grew by 20%, and UEBT’s diverse staff welcomed new representatives in Southeast Asia and India, as well as experts on knowledge sharing and Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS).

We worked with companies on their Biodiversity Action Plans and released a detailed manual and a learning platform on the topic.  UEBT continued to be seen as the global expert on ABS and we fostered several examples of ABS excellence within our membership.  In 2019, we also had the pleasure of seeing the first UEBT labelled products – from Natura and Weleda - released in stores.

As we write this in late April 2020, the world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic and our international sustainability community is working diligently, despite this new set of unprecedented challenges, to launch the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. UEBT and its members and partners will continue our core work together, and later in 2020 we will share lessons learnt over the past many years and publish a set of concrete future recommendations for business on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

We could not do this work without you, and we thank you for your commitment. Here’s to a better next decade that sees more positive trends emerge for all people and biodiversity.

Business for biodiversity

Over the years, UEBT has contributed to a shift in how business think of biodiversity, including:

· A shift in business awareness on access and benefit sharing, resulting in an increase of company policies and concrete efforts on access and benefit sharing related to biodiversity based research and development

· A shift in awareness of ethical sourcing systems that respect all people and biodiversity

· A shift in awareness of concrete actions companies can take for people and biodiversity

But more needs to be done. Read the UEBT document The Big Shift: Recommendations for business on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity (coming July 2020) that are part of the contribution of UEBT to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Gaston Vizcarra, President of Candela

“Based on the principle of sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity, we focus on transparent, open information; a direct relationship with our producers and long-term commitments and purchasing agreements for them.”

Guadalupe Bojorquez, General Manager of Mexialoe Laboratorios

“We have decided to plant aloe on previously degraded land and have avoided planting in high biodiversity areas. We teach people to conserve and live alongside diverse species present in their aloe fields and hope they will spread this philosophy to the next generations.”

“We have been farming herbs for more than 25 years and we always wanted to produce a sustainable product that can have a positive impact on people and the environment. We feel this business model is the best choice for us.”

James Lambe, Managing Director of Blue Sky Botanics

“Over the years we have seen a dramatic shift in the prioritisation of ethics and sustainability in supply chains; this is coming from customer demand and resonates throughout the supply chain with suppliers now becoming more receptive to, or sometimes more apprehensive of, the kinds of questions that we need answering in supplier and raw material approval.”

Sourcing with respect

UEBT works to significantly increase the positive impact of companies’ raw material innovation and sourcing practices on people and biodiversity.

Our 2019 Priorities

1. Branding and market recognition

2. Credible and innovative certification

3. Facilitating ethical sourcing

4. Governance and business model

In 2019 we had good progress against these…

  • Nine new members welcomed into UEBT in 2019

  • Natura and Weleda expanded use of the UEBT label across key markets

  • Largest UEBT conference held with 300 delegates in Paris

  • UEBT offices established in Vietnam and India

  • Launched UEBT E-Learning Platform for members

  • Released numerous resources on ABS and Biodiversity Action Plans

  • Hired a second ABS expert to expand our services

  • Announced new partnerships including with BioInnovation Africa and the EcoEnterprises Fund

  • Improved our governance model with independent Board members from civil society organisations.

And much more…

Verifying good practice

UEBT members pledge to ethically source. We assess their sourcing systems after which member companies develop work plans to further improve practices, both inside the company and in the places where raw materials from biodiversity are sourced. Verification is focused on learning and improving, and some companies also choose to step into certification. Certification validates that the requirements of the UEBT Ethical BioTrade Standard are met. UEBT offers certification of a company’s ethical sourcing systems or certification of specific ingredients.

Sharing benefits, accessing resources equitably

UEBT has become the global voice on ABS. In 2019 UEBT guided and verified compliance with ABS good practices embedded in the Ethical BioTrade Standard. We continued to provide a wide range of training and advisory services to help companies comply with regulations. Our popular ABS Exchange at the UEBT Conference in Paris in May brought together companies with more than 50 government representatives working in regulatory affairs, with several of the official focal points for ABS present in the room for a deep discussion on a wide range of ABS issues.

Ethical BioTrade Standard

UEBT works to regenerate nature and and secure a better future for people through ethical sourcing of ingredients from biodiversity. UEBT’s Ethical BioTrade Standard is used to independently check that ethical practices are systematically applied. Following good practice in standard-setting, we revise the UEBT standard every five years through a participatory process including two public consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including companies, affected local and indigenous communities, NGOs, governments and academia.

The second consultation ended in August 2019.  During the second consultation period:

The new standard will be published in 2020.
